A Very Costly Email Mistake

4/18/2016

As you all know I’m a nerd and I try to be detail-oriented but sometimes, in the heat of the moment, I make a mistake. In this case, the mistake proved to be expensive.

I have several email addresses associated with the various businesses I own. There’s one for the car show calendar, one for the DJ business and one for this business, which helps small businesses maximize their digital presence.

I intended to send an email to someone telling them about the free car show listing on my car show calendar but I sent it using the email associated with this marketing consulting business.

So what? They just happened to be shopping for someone to help with their digital presence and, long story long, I turned out to be the guy. So how is this related to marketing?

In almost everything you do you have the opportunity to tell the world about yourself. Even your smart phone can create a signature line that tells the world a little more about you and your business. Since you’re already sending an email to them, it’s not like there’s any additional cost or even effort to write a signature line that’s a little bit about what you do.

Another thing that tells your story is the email address you use. Now, why wouldn’t I use something like Gmail or another service? Those email addresses are whatever@gmail.com. That last part, @gmail.com, is advertising Gmail, which is a great service but so what? The objective with marketing yourself is to market yourself.

I think it’s better to have an email address such as yourname@yourswebsite.com. This is just another little feather in the cap of your marketing and, generally speaking, doing this is not very expensive.

My own email tag line has links to this website, has my logo and the signature line “Easier than asking your grandchildren for help.” This is what got the people whom I sent the email to to contact me and, eventually engage my services.

Using your email as one more tool to advertise your business as a professional operation is an inexpensive and easy way to go.
