Two Women vs. Cat meme - where did it come from?

11/21/2019

What is it, where did it come from?

The internet is in love with the Woman Yelling At A Cat meme; the phenomenon even made its way into a few Halloween costumes. But what is the cat vs. women meme and how did it become so popular? And who are the women - and who is the cat in the meme?

As with so many memes on the Internet, this came out of serendipity as the images were each already being used as memes to start with. However, once they got together it became Internet gold.

The women in the meme are from the television program The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills where then-cast member Taylor Armstong was in an emotional confrontation with Camille Grammer as fellow housewife Kyle Richards attempted to calm her down.

The cat portion of the meme stars the chilled white cat whose origins started on Tumblr when user deadbeforedeath posted a photo of a white cat with a cool expression sitting in a chair in front of a salad on a table. The caption, at that time, was “he no like vegetals.” (sic)

That cat is Smudge and he actually has a pretty solid following on Instagram.

Someone on Twitter actually put the two together in May of 2019 and that’s when the wildfire started. But it hit Reddit, which is ground zero for so many memes, and there it went.

And now, a slide show of some of my favorite uses of this meme.

If you really want to waste a tremendous amount of time some of the research for this piece came from Know Your Meme, a website about…Internet Memes.
